Book of Extinction is featured on Young Dragonslayers! Check out the full interview with Jaclyn Lewis and discover how to use this tool to teach conservation and biology through D&D.
Lewis and I explored some of the most important and interesting parts of making this book. You’ll learn where I found my sources (and how you can too), how we connected with our science consultant Tierra Curry and the Center for Biological Diversity, and how not to give up on a long, demanding project you believe in.
Here’s my favorite quote from the interview:
“Young players especially ask great questions. They’re not ashamed of those questions. I strive as a person to maintain a childlike wonder that asks good questions. I hope that this book will remind you of what childlike wonder looks like for both the world that you live in, and the world that you imagine, and I truly believe that it will let you ask and answer childishly good questions.”
Young Dragonslayers is a “looking for group” site that offers safe and fun online D&D groups for kids, tweens and teens, especially neurodivergent and queer-identified youth. They aim to create a safe, supportive environment where kids can reap the benefits of roleplaying like consistent community and practicing social-emotional skills. They also offer a blog full of thoughtful resources for running TTRPGs with younger players.
Lewis has a strong body of work about crafting inclusive, educational gaming experiences. They’ve written articles for Young Dragonslayers like 10 Classic Dinos in D&D, How Do You Get a Pet in D&D?, and Are Dimension 20 and Critical Role Kid Friendly? They’ve also written the book on running inclusive, safe, and fun roleplaying games for all ages, called Rolling with the Youth.
