Alternative to Goodberry

 

Goodberry is an excellent spell; a staple of druids everywhere. However, we here at Middle Finger of Vecna are perfectionists and relentless innovators, so we’ve decided to churn out several alternatives to the goodberry spell, for your enjoyment.

Badberry

Transmutation cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V S
Duration: Instantaneous

A cluster of poisonous berries appear in your hand, which you can throw at a target within range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the berries burst into a spray of poisonous juice. The target takes 1d8 poison damage and each creature within 5 feet of the target must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 poison damage.
     The spell’s damage increases by one die when you reach 5th level (2d8 and 2d4), 11th level (3d8 and 3d4), and 17th level (4d8 and 4d4).

Goodbarry

1st-level conjuration

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 10 feet
Components: V S M (a page from a book of addresses)
Duration: 1 hour

A friendly commoner named Barry pops into existence within range. Barry has AC 10, 5 HP, 8 for all ability scores, and is friendly to you and your allies, regarding you as trusted acquaintances. You can’t have more than one Barry at a time. Barry is happy to assist you and your allies in any way, but is loath to be involved with deception or violence. In combat, Barry rolls his own initiative and acts on his own turn. When Barrys drop to 0 hit points or the spell’s duration ends, he vanishes, leaving behind no physical form.

Goodbury

1st level transmutation (ritual)

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 10 feet
Components: V S M (a figurine of a spade)
Duration: Instantaneous

An object within range which is sitting on natural earth and which can fit within a 5-foot cube sinks into the soil. The object comes to rest completely covered in up to three feet of dirt.

 

Okayberry

Transmutation cantrip

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V S
Duration: Instantaneous

A bitter, nutritionless berry appears in your hand. A creature can consume a berry as an action to restore 1 hit point. If an unconscious creature or a creature that has consumed more than 3 berries within the last 24 hours consumes a berry, it has no effect. This berry loses its potency if not consumed within 24 hours.
     The number of hit points regained by a creature that consumed a berry increases by 1 when you reach 5th level (2 HP each), 11th level (3 HP each), and 17th level (4 HP each).

Greatberry

3rd-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V S
Duration: Instantaneous

Up to 10 berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration. A creature can use its action to eat one berry. Eating a berry restores 1d4 hit points, removes one level of exhaustion, and provides enough nourishment to sustain the creature for one day. The berries lose this potency if they have not been consumed within 24 hours of the casting of this spell.
     At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 4th level or higher, the spell produces on additional berry for each slot level above 3rd.

Goodberry Bush

5th-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V S
Duration: Instantaneous

You plant a seed in the earth, which sprouts into a small bush after 8 hours. This bush produces 100 berries. A creature can consume a berry as an action to restore 1 hit point. Consuming a berry also provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day.
     Once plucked from the bush, a berry loses its potency if not consumed within 24 hours. The bush itself withers away 24 hours after being cast. If you cast the spell again in the same location as a goodberry bush, the bush replenishes its plucked berries at dawn.
     You can create a permanent goodberry bush by casting this spell in the same location every day for one year. A permanent version of this bush replenishes 10d10 plucked berries at dawn.

Godberry

9th-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V S M (a goodberry and a small amount of gold foil)
Duration: 1 hour

A single golden berry of immaculate flavor appears in your hand. This berry loses its potency if not consumed within 24 hours. A creature can consume this berry as an action, gaining the following benefits:

  • The creature regains all hit points, and gains temporary hit points equal to half its maximum hit points. These temporary hit points last for 1 hour.
  • The creature is no longer blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, incapacitated, paralyzed, poisoned, stunned, or exhausted.
